Serbian rugby league’s traditional big city derby between Belgrade clubs Dorćol and Red Star opened the 17th season of the Serbian Rugby League Championship. The game was played at the city’s BASK Arena, where a small but vocal crowd of 150 spectators enjoyed an entertaining spectacle. Red Star’s victory was well deserved in the end, with the reigning champions picking up the two important championship points, but Serbia’s 14-time champions didn’t hold back either, and ultimately showed that this season’s favourites will find it much tougher than expected to win their points.

This was the 36th encounter between the two clubs. The Spiders from Dorćol have amassed 26 wins, with this victory representing Red Star’s 10th win over their cross-city rivals. Red Star opened the scoring through winger Vuk Štrbac in the 5th minute, but Dorćol soon fought back to draw level in the 15th minute, through Stefan Vukanović – the younger brother of Serbian league legend and Dorćol coach Dalibor Vukanović. Then, in the 23rd minute, Scotland’s Sam Herron, one of Red Star’s latest acquisitions, showed why he has received a warm welcome in Belgrade, when his great speed and straight running sent him through virtually untouched to score off a Jack O’Brien pass, restoring Red Star’s lead, which it would go on to retain throughout the match, scoring a further 28 unanswered points, including a hattrick for Štrbac. However, Dorćol’s charges regained their composure and closed the match with tries in the 69th and 80th minutes.

In the Serbian Championship’s other division one match, Partizan beat Radnički New Belgrade convincingly, 64:18. This match supported a charitable cause. .
